In the world of computing, the term hardware refers to the physical computer itself or it's peripherals, as opposed to software, which refers to the programs and operating systems that are loaded onto the hardware to make it useful.  There is also a third term, firmware, that refers to programs that have been burned into a chip in the computer for startup or diagnostic purposes.  Firmware is available to get things going in the computer before it can see any software that might be available or to help with problems when the software isn't working.
