In the world of computing, the term software refers to the programs and operating systems that are loaded onto the hardware to make it useful. Usually when you receive a computer, it will have an operating system (OS) already installed that will run when you turn it on (i.e., "boot it up"). There are several providers of operating systems and each issues new versions occasionally to improve its usefulness.

Once your computer is up and running it's OS, you're able to choose which programs you would like to run. Some programs may be set up to run automatically at boot time, but most are started by you, the user.
