Tico Byte for June, 2019

Hello, PC Club members,

The 3rd Saturday is coming up again this weekend.  The PC Club meeting will be on June 15th this month, at the Pan American School in Belen starting at 9 AM.  We will be meeting in our normal room in the bottom floor of the Yellow Building, all the way to the back.  (Signs will be posted.) Coffee, snacks, & conversation will be available, as always, at 8:30.  Bring anything computer-related that you have questions about or anything you would like to share with the group.

  1. Dick will open the meeting & preside over club business.

  2. Ken will welcome guests & new members.

  3. Ken's Treasurer's report:  $1535.71 in the treasury with 22 paid memberships for 2019. [Ed. Note: This link is open to logged-in club members only.]

    Dues remain $30/year/family. (New members' dues are prorated to remaining months in their 1st year.)

  4. Dick will ask if we should shut down the Member Forum on our website (due to lack of use).

  5. Ken will moderate the microphone going around the room to hear your news & questions. The meeting will be recorded, so please use the microphone & say your name. Suggestions: Tell us what potential topics you’d like to see or mention something interesting you found on the web this month. (3 or 4 minutes/member)

  7. Guest speaker Jim Robinson will give us an overview about the structure of the internet fm a security viewpoint. He is the former Executive VP of GPN Data. Jim will talk about his experiences developing global solutions for internet credit card transactions & answer your questions about the internet. He is an experienced data center software developer & network administrator.

    Jim has put together a list of potential topics. Obviously, there is enough material here for several meetings, so we will ask him to give us the view fm 30,000 ft about the how financial security on the internet works.

    Here are some specific topics he will touch on at a general level:

    1. IP (Internet Protocol): IPv4 description & limitations, obtaining an IP address (DHCP), searching for an IP address (DNS), Root Level DNS servers, & Local DNS servers

    2. The Internet Backbone: What is the “backbone” & who owns it? How are the ISPs in Costa Rica connected to the Backbone? What is a Data Center & how many are in Costa Rica?

    3. Internet Security: What's the difference between a Virus & Malware? What is HTTPS? What are DDoS & DoS & how are they different? What is password security & why it is important?

  8. Potential Topics

    1. Smart phone topics

    2. (Sid) Presentation from Apple rep (or knowledgeable user)

    3. (Dick) Revisiting the Member Forum (where your login is the same as logging into the club website)
